New Stars Shine at South Portland Concert
On Tuesday, April 13th, the South Portland Auditorium shone a little more brightly as the 6th Grade bands from Mahoney and Memorial Middle Schools performed. The show opened with the Mahoney Training Jazz Band's rendition of "My Dinner With Ronald". Memorial's 6th Grade Jazz Band followed with "The Blues At Frog Bottom"
After the Jazz bands finished the Mahoney 6th Grade Band, under the direction of Sandra Barry, took the stage. They opened with a composite piece of two English folks songs, "Shepherd's Hey" and "English Garden". The group continued with the pop tune "The Simpsons" and ended their performance with the Dixieland standard "When The Saints Come Marching In".
The Memorial 6th Grade Band, under the direction of Jean Quinn, kept the evening going with "Cedar Canyon Roundup". They followed with "Colors Of the Wind" from the Disney movie "Pocahontas" and "Pirates Of The Caribbean" from the movie "Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl".
Ms Quinn then relinquished the baton to her student teacher Erin Ouellette from USM. Ms. Ouellette directed the band in a lively version of Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" from the "Peanuts" TV specials. The Memorial band was then joined by the the Mahoney band. Together they performed the rousing Sousa march "Manhattan Beach" to close the evening.
