Masterworks Festival Masterful

The Chamber Singers from South Portland High School performed in the annual Masterworks Festival April 3rd at Gorham High School. Along with choirs from Gorham, Massabesic, Westbrook, Deering and Greater Portland Christian they sang Joseph Haydn's "Missa Cellensis" under the direction of Dr. Robert Russell from USM and accompanied by a 12 member orchestra. Highlights included Abby Levis' Alto solo during the "Kyrie". The "Missa Cellensis" lasted 25 minutes and included some beautiful, sacred orchestral music.

Each school then had a chance to perform individually. The Chamber Singers from South Portland opened with a stirring rendition of "Ave Maria". Soloists Joe Canarie, Abby Levis and Martha Pulsifer where delightful to hear. They followed this with "Dirait-on", a melodic French composition that blended the voices dramatically. They closed with the audience-pleasing "The Argument", a comedic song about a couple that can't seem to agree on anything. The singers play off one another as the argument escalates on stage until it appears to come to an end only to continue when it can't be decided who was right and who was wrong.
