Bands

South Portland has band programs in Elementary, Middle and High School.

Elementary School

All five South Portland Elementary School Bands are directed by Ms. Jenny Fletcher. She is responsible for getting your student on the path to learning and loving to play a musical instrument. In 5th grade, all students have the option of joining the band for their school. To help your child decide which instrument to learn, within the first month or so of school, middle school students visit schools to demonstrate various instruments and answer questions.

Students get to choose from many instruments, including: trumpet, saxophone, trombone, flute, clarinet and more.

Instruments can be purchased or rented from Music and Arts.

Middle School

Mrs. Amy Anderson is the band director for Memorial Middle School and Mr. Benjamin Appel  is the band director for Mahoney Middle School.

In middle school, students can participate in band regardless of whether they were in band in elementary school. Middle School band adds the choice of percussion to the many instruments available. For those that want to broaden their music skills, students can also participate in Learning Jazz Band and Performance Jazz Band.

Twice a year (winter and spring), the schools have band concerts hosted at the South Portland High School Auditorium.

High School

The High School Band Director is Mr. Craig Skeffington. In High School, there are options for concert band, wind ensemble and jazz bands. Students perform at a variety of concerts throughout the school year.

In addition, the Marching Band is available as an extracurricular activity.
